01
File preparation
Prepare final, print-ready artwork for the exact packaging template confirmed for your order.
- Supply closed PDF or EPS artwork in CMYK, never RGB or Lab.
- Use Press Quality export settings and embed all fonts or convert them to outlines.
- Images must be at least 300 dpi at final size.
- Define spot colours with Pantone references and place die cuts, folds and creases on separate overprint layers.
- Supply booklets as one multi-page PDF in single-page order, starting with page 1.
- Remove trapping from supplied files; production trapping is handled during prepress when needed.
02
Layout, bleed and safe area
Small layout errors become visible after cutting, folding and binding.
- Add 3 mm bleed on every trimmed outer edge.
- Keep text and important graphics at least 3 mm inside cut lines.
- Centre artwork on the page and keep page dimensions consistent.
- For perfect-bound books, leave the specified 5 mm gluing area clear.
- Check crop marks, orientation, folds and page order before export.
03
Colour and profiles
The correct profile depends on the printed material and finish.
- Use Fogra 39 for coated material such as glossy, matt or UV-varnished stock.
- Use Euroscale Uncoated v2 for uncoated material and reverse-side printing.
- Without an ICC profile, keep total ink below 320% on coated stock and 260% on uncoated stock.
- For rich black on coated stock use approximately C60 M60 Y60 K100; for uncoated stock use approximately C50 M40 Y40 K100.
- Build neutral grey from black where possible to reduce colour variation.
04
Type, lines and barcodes
- Minimum type: 7 pt single colour; 8 pt multicolour block type; 10 pt multicolour or knocked-out type.
- Minimum line: 0.2 pt single colour and 0.75 pt multicolour or knocked out.
- Set small black text on colour backgrounds to overprint, except over metallic inks.
- Barcodes should be 100% opaque, preferably black.
- Avoid embedded profiles, OPI comments and direct PostScript code from unsupported design software.
05
Special finishes
- Supply Spot UV artwork as 100% vector coverage; keep it away from cuts and creases.
- Minimum Spot UV line: 0.5 mm, or 1 mm when knocked out.
- Minimum raised UV line: 1.5 mm; minimum glitter UV line: 2 mm.
- Minimum hot-foil line: 0.3 mm, or 0.4 mm when knocked out.
- Supply foil and embossing artwork as vectors, preferably set to overprint.
- Minimum embossing line: 0.35 mm and never thinner than the material permits.
06
Proofs and approval
A certified contract proof is required when exact colour matching matters.
- The proof must state the ICC profile, title or catalogue reference, page number, Ugra/FOGRA control strip and date.
- Create the proof from the final files supplied for printing.
- Without a certified proof, printing is assessed against ISO 12647-2.
- Lamination, UV and other finishes can alter the appearance of colour.
- Files that require correction may incur additional charges, always communicated for approval first.
